Kielletty hedelmä / Forbidden fruit

"Mätä kala, ruumis, vaniljakastike, kaatopaikka, kuollut koira...", muun muassa näillä sanoilla kuvaillaan kylteissä esiintyvää Durian-hedelmää. Löyhä on toistaiseksi estänyt minua maistamasta tätä hedelmien kuninkaaksi kutsuttua, mutta ehkä jonain päivänä... Tässä National Geographicin Durian-dokkarissa mainitaan esimerksi, että usein aasialaiset eivät taas siedä homejuustoa - tuota monen länkkärin herkkua.

"Rotten fish, corpse, custard, rubbish dump, dead dog..." - some words that have been used to describe the Durian fruit which you can see in these signs. The smell has so far prevented me from tasting this "king of fruits" but maybe one day... This National Geographic's Durian documentary mentions that on the contrary many Asian people don't tolerate blue cheese - the delicacy of many westerner.

Trooppinen terassikahvila / Tropical terrace cafe

Phoenix parkista (tai alunperin netistä haulla "kid friendly cafes Singapore") löytyi Spruce. Komea terassikahvila puiden katveessa. Vapaata aamiaispöytää sai tovin odottaa, mutta se kannatti. Suut nautti mauista ja silmät näyistä. Leikkialue oli kiva, vaikkakin sateen jäljiltä pisarainen.

From the Phoenix park we found (or originally through web search "kid friendly cafes Singapore") Spruce. A handsome terrace cafe in the shade of the trees. We were waiting for a free breakfast table for a while but it was worth it. Mouths enjoyed the flavors and eyes the sights. The playing area was nice, although wet after the rain.

Henkien kuukausi / Ghost month

Kadunreunoille on jätetty suitsukkeita ja ruokaa, jota ei ole tarkoitettu nälkäisille ohikulkijoille vaan vainajille. Seitsemäs lunaarinen kuukausi kiinalaisen kalenterissa on ns. kummituskuukausi (tänä vuonna 7.8. - 4.9.) jolloin kuolleet tulevat kyläilemään maailmassamme, moikkaamaan sukulaisia, herkuttelemaan ja kaappaamaan sieluja. Heitä kunnioitetaan ja miellytetään tarjoamalla ruokaa ja polttamalla suitsukkeita ja aaverahaa. Jos esi-isiä ei pidä tyytyväisinä, he voivat kostaa ja seurauksena voi olla sairaus tai onnettomuus.

Kiinalaisen uskomuksen mukaan kummituskuukausi on vuoden vaarallisin. Ihmiset saattavat välttää matkustamista, muuttamista tai vaikka uimista. Onkohan sattumaa, että meillä on viime aikoina ollut poikkeuksellisen tiuhaan pientä sairautta ja onnettomuutta kuten silmätulehdus, korvatulehdus, potkulaudalla kaatuminen, särkyneitä laseja ja kahvikuppeja?

Vuoden 2013 Hungry Ghost festival (中元節 / 中元节), Ghost day, on tänään tiistaina, 20. elokuuta eli nyt henget ovat eniten valtoiminaan. Ehkäpä kannattaa noudattaa enemmän täällä paljon kuultua "Be careful!"-neuvoa ainakin syyskuun 4. päivään saakka, kunnes portit taas sulkeutuvat...

On the streets there are altars of incense and food which are not for hungry but for the dead people. The seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar is called Ghost Month (this year 7.8. - 4.9.), when the departed come to visit their family, feasting and searching for victims. People show respect and please them by offering food and burning incense and ghost money. If the ancestors are not gratified they can take revenge and may cause sickness or accident.

According to the Chinese belief the ghost month is the most dangerous month of the year, because the spirits are trying to capture souls. People may avoid traveling, moving or for example swimming. I wonder if it's just a coincidence that we have recently had exceptionally frequently small illness and accidents such as falling of the scooter, infections and several broken cups?

In 2013 Hungry Ghost Festival (中元节 / 中元节), Ghost Day, is today, Tuesday 20th of August so now the spirits are the most rampant.  Maybe it's better to follow more the much used advice here "Be careful!", at least until September 4th when the gates close again ...

Takeaway

Vieressämme ollut food court (mikä olisi muuten sopiva suomennos sanalle?) lopetti juuri toimintansa, mikä oli monelle harmin paikka, vaikka itse en totta puhuen sieltä vielä löytänyt ruokaa, jota olisin vesi kielellä syönyt. Tuoreista hedelmistä paikan päällä puristetut mehut olivat kyllä nameja. Ison tuopillisen mehua sai alle kahdella eurolla ja ruoka-annoksesta maksoin halvimmaan alle euron. En aina tiennyt, mitä annos sisälsi, sillä myyjät eivät usein puhuneet englantia. Kunpa osaisin kiinaa. Vastapäinen katuravintola on sentään jatkossakin auki ja kuvassa heidän noutoateriapakkauksensa. Sen sisältämä safka oli ihmeen hyvää, annoksesta riitti kahteen ateriaan ja hintalappuna oli noin 3 euroa.

The food court next to us was just closed down which is sad for many, but I have to admit that I didn't yet find any really delicious food from there. The fresh fruit juices were yummy though. A large pint of juice was 3 SGD and the cheapest food meal I bought was 1,5 SGD. I didn't always know what the meals were made of as the sellers didn't often speak English. I wish I knew Chinese. The street restaurant opposite this (ex) food court will continue and the image above is their take-away packaging. The food in it was surprisingly good, portion was enough for two meals and the price tag was about 5 SGD.

Pala onnea / Piece of happiness

Kahviterapiaa / Coffee Therapy

Kolmea kahvilaa voin jo suositella täällä Singaporessa. Ensimmäinen on meidän lähellä sijaitseva Jimmy Monkey, jossa on oivaa kahvia ja avara, mukava sisustus. Toinen on Hatched, joka tuli vastaan Holland Villagessa. Siellä oli ilahduttava palvelu, suussasulavat suklaamuffinssit ja iloinen interiööri. Kolmas kahvila on Outram Parkin läheltä löytyvä Group Therapy, jossa oli rento tunnelma ja hyvää kahvia.

There is three coffee shops I can already recommend here in Singaporessa. First one, Jimmy Monkey, is located near us and has excellent coffee and spacious yet comfortable look. The second one is Hatched in Holland Village. There was cheerful service, delicious chocolate muffins and fun interior. The third cafe which is near Outram Park is called Group Therapy and has a relaxed atmosphere and decent coffee.
