Kuukakkukekkerit / Mooncake Festival

Tänään täällä vietetään kiinalaista keskisyksyn kuujuhlaa. Koulussa olivat juhlavaatteissa (joka tarkoittaa yleensä normaaleja vaatteita koulupuvun sijaan) ja mm. söivät kuukakkuja. Pimeän tullen moni singaporelaisperhe hengasi hissukseen ulkona lyhtyjen ja tähtisadetikkujen kanssa. Meidänkin kotiin saapui Superman-lyhtyjä. Hetki sitten kuu-ukko oli vielä piilossa pilvien takana, mutta nyt se näkyy kirkkaana ja kokonaisena taivaalla.

Today people here celebrate the Chinese Mooncake Festival. In the school kids had the party clothes (it usually means normal clothes instead of school uniform) on and they for example ate Mooncakes. After dark many Singaporean family were outdoors quietly with lanterns and sparklers. We also got some Superman-lanterns to our home. A moment ago Mr Moon was hiding behind the clouds but now it shows brightly and as a whole in the sky.

Kielletty hedelmä / Forbidden fruit

"Mätä kala, ruumis, vaniljakastike, kaatopaikka, kuollut koira...", muun muassa näillä sanoilla kuvaillaan kylteissä esiintyvää Durian-hedelmää. Löyhä on toistaiseksi estänyt minua maistamasta tätä hedelmien kuninkaaksi kutsuttua, mutta ehkä jonain päivänä... Tässä National Geographicin Durian-dokkarissa mainitaan esimerksi, että usein aasialaiset eivät taas siedä homejuustoa - tuota monen länkkärin herkkua.

"Rotten fish, corpse, custard, rubbish dump, dead dog..." - some words that have been used to describe the Durian fruit which you can see in these signs. The smell has so far prevented me from tasting this "king of fruits" but maybe one day... This National Geographic's Durian documentary mentions that on the contrary many Asian people don't tolerate blue cheese - the delicacy of many westerner.

Lause "täällähän on viileää" on saanut uuden merkityksen: huomaan käyttäväni sitä jos lämpötila tippuu noin 30:een tai piirun verran alle. Vaikka vielä pitkät hihat ja lahkeet olisivat turhan paljon päällä.

I think it's funny for a Finn to use the phrase "Oh, it's chilly here" when the degrees drop to around 30 or a bit below. Even if still the long sleeves would be too much on.

Eräänä hullun kuumana päivänä kipusimme torniin Chinese Gardenissa.
On one mad hot day we climbed to the tower in Chinese Garden.

Porteilla vastaan tuli varaani.
On the gates we came across with a monitor lizard.
