Sarvikuonot = Croissant muzzles = Rhinos

Kuvassa Leveähuulisarvikuono, ainoa elossa olevista sarvikuonolajeista, joka ei ole uhanalainen. Ne voivat edetä 50 km/h vauhdilla ja elää 50-vuotiaiksi, toisin kuin Western black rhinoceros -lajin edustajat, joita ei enää ole.

Some White rhinoceros, the only rhinoceros species that is not endagered at the moment. They can go as fast as 50 km/h and live up to 50 years old unlike the Western black rhinoceros which do not exist anymore.

Suomikuvaa Singaporessa / Finland's image in Singapore

Singaporessa moni mainitsee ensimmäisenä laadukkaan koulujärjestelmän jos Suomi tulee puheeksi. Vähintään kerran kuussa löysin paikallislehdistä jutun Suomen kouluun liittyvästä aiheesta, kuten yllä kuvaamani The Straits Timesin juttu.

In Singapore many mentions first the high quality education system when we talk about Finland. At least once a month I found Finnish school related article in the local newspapers such as this story in The Straits Times. 

ILO ILO?

Katsoin paikallisen Anthony Chenin ohjaaman elokuvan ILO ILO, jossa singaporelaisperheeseen tulee filippiiniläinen apulainen 90-luvun laman alkaessa. Nostalginen ja todenmakuinen tyyli sekä aihe - etenkin apulaisen näkökulma - kiinnostivat, mutta katkeamaton kovuus ja ilottomuus uuvutti. Silti vaikka totiset kasvot ja hiljaiset hetket ovatkin tuttuja suomalaisesta tuotannosta. Ainakaan filmissä ei kaunisteltu totuutta.

I went to see a local film ILO ILO directed by Anthony Chen in which a Filipino maid comes to a Singaporean family when recession is starting in 90's. The nostalgic style and the subject (especially the aspect of the maid) were compelling but the endless roughness and seriousness were exhausting, even if the silent moments and joyless faces are familiar from Finnish film production ("ilo" by the way means "joy" in Finnish). At least the movie was truthful.

Riippumatto / Hammock

Riippumatto on loman konkretisoituma. Keho ja mieli keinuu pienessä tuulenvireessä, puut humisee, aallot kohisee... Kokeilin kotikulmilla vähän erilaista riippumattoa "liitojoogassa" (floating yoga). Myönnettäköön, ettei oma suoritukseni ollut ihan tämän lentojoogin tasoa, mutta hauskaa oli. Lempiliikkeeni oli ehdottomasti ns. cocoon, jossa kääriydytään sykkyrälle mattoon ja vaan ollaan.
Eikö joka kodin varustukseen voisi kuulua riippumatto?

Hammock is a realization of a holiday. Body and mind swinging in the mild wind, trees are humming, waves splashing... I tried a bit different hammock near home at the Floating yoga. I admit that my performance was not quite at the same level as this aerial yogi but we had fun. My favorite pose was so called cocoon where you wrap yourself in the hammock and just be there.
Shouldn't every home be equipped with a hammock?
